Visa

We all know that the UK is part of the US Visa Waiver Program, but this only covers stays of up to 90 days.

So, it looks as if we will need to apply for a B-2 visa. There is no specific limit on these, but forums seem to indicate that 6 months is the initial amount.

We'll need a trip to the embassy, providing proof that we plan to come back: employment, mortgage, family here in the UK.

Again, all sounds doable!

Initial Logistical Concerns

Of course there is a long way to go yet, but there are some initial hurdles we need to think about. In no particular order:
Money
Our finger-in-the-air estimate is that we might need £30k for a trip like this. We have the savings to cover this, and are happy to raid them.
Work
Sam's employer currently offers a sabbatical programme, and the idea of getting some salary to cover the mortgage is even better. 6 months might need special dispensation, but we'll see. I have agreed in principle a 6-month break with my boss, so all good so far!
House
We will obviously keep our house, so will need a means of it being looked after. Obviously Mitzy (and any companion she might have by then) is the main concern here. Getting house-sitters in - friends, family or strangers - is probably the main option. Probably the biggest unknown at this stage, and one we will no doubt blog about more in the future.
Transport
All sorts of options here - car versus RV, rental versus buy-to-sell. Lots more research needed!
