Broken Widget -->

Yep, I have broken our countdown/trip route widget. I will get round to fixing it this week...

Exciting Delivery!

Today I received an exciting delivery through my letterbox. No, seriously: printable, transparent stickers. Oh yeah!

I wanted to be able to annotate our paper map* with our overnight stops and maybe some key places we are visiting en route, but didn't want to draw all over the map. I also wanted to minimise the amount of map that I blotted out, so opaque stickers were out too.

This is the result, which I am quite chuffed with:

* Yep, we're taking a real map - no proper adventurer relies solely on digital maps. I chose the Rand McNally Large Scale 2018 Road Atlas.

Michigan

I worked in Dearborn, Michigan for a couple of months about 4 years ago. I am excited to be going back to show Lee some of the places I enjoyed visiting such as the Henry Ford Estate, The Henry Ford Museum, Bailey's Bar where I used to hustle at pool and Starters Bar and Grill where we went for dinner most nights.

We have spent quite a lot of time debating whether to visit Detroit or not. I've been to Detroit once to see a Red Wings game and even though I was with a big group of people from work, I didn't feel particularly safe on the People Mover Monorail. Maybe I was being unfair on Detroit - it was 4 years ago, it was a big match and we were travelling at night. Still, after some research on Detroit, we're still not sure if its worth a visit so we're going to wait until we are in Dearborn and decide if we want to make the trip in.

Cowboy Country - Kansas and Oklahoma

Before entering Kansas, we need to have our boots and hats ready as we're going straight through the heart of Cowboy Country!

We're hoping to follow the Santa Fe Trail from Kansas City to Kanopolis State Park. Before the railroad was built in 1872, the Santa Fe Trail used to be a major trade route across Kansas into Santa Fe New Mexico. It was also a very dangerous route with travelers having to take their wagons along 900 miles of arid plains, desert and mountains with very little freshwater and food and the danger of a Native American attack. We are lucky to be doing this trail with a car full of supplies, we just need to watch out for the rattlesnakes!

We're then heading to Wichita which has a lot of reasons to be famous - Aircraft capital city, world's first Pizza Hut, tornadoes (Wichita is part of Tornado Alley), etc... but most important to us, our mate Jay used to visit it a lot and we're looking forward to seeing the people and places he described in real life!

After Wichita, we are leaving Kansas and heading into Oklahoma down the Chisholm Trail. The Chisholm Trail was used after the civil war to drive cattle from ranches in Texas to the railroad in Kansas and each have their own unique history from the time.

After reaching Oklahoma city, we are then picking up Route 66 to Tulsa! This part of Route 66 is supposed to be pretty special with lots of neon road attractions including POP, a restaurant with the largest collection of fizzy drinks in the world.
