Day 42 - Crater of Diamonds State Park, AR

Crater of Diamonds State Park is only 1.5 hours from Hot Springs and it is the only site in the world where you can dig for diamonds and keep whatever you find.

We camped at this state park too in a primitive campsite but it had lovely toilets and showers. With all those people digging in the mud all day, having good showers is a must!

The diamond digging site is a 20 minute walk or 5 minute drive away from the campsite. It cost $10 per person for a whole days digging plus you can then hire the equipment. We arrived just after lunch time, did a couple of hours unsuccessful digging and then decided the sun was too hot so we went away for an iced drink and came back later in the afternoon for another couple of hours.

Even though it was really hot, it was a lot of fun and I can see how people could spend all day or even all weekend here diamond hunting when it is cooler. You do get obsessed with trying to find something!

The rangers are around to help identify anything you find and they don't make you feel stupid when you present them with just a normal rock and ask them what it is (yes, I did that!).

There is also a waterpark on site and access to it is included in your Diamond Hunting ticket. We didn't go but it looked great for kids and adults wanting to cool off.

  1. Sorry to hear you found no big diamond to bring home for me ☹️ but it sounded a lot of fun anyway just the digging and hoping. Wished you explained what your one find of a Jasper was thou. Also liked the look of the campsite and to see a neighbour or two.
