Day 69 - Dead Horse Point State Park & Canyonlands National Park, UT

We started today off with a good breakfast in Jail House, the only place in Moab that sells breakfast all day!

We then headed to Dead Horse Point State Park. The main reason for heading here was to see the filming location of the famous Thelma and Louise scene where they drive off the ‘Grand Canyon’. It was $20 per car entry and just as we were complaining about how steep the entry fee was just to see a filming location, we were blown away by the view! It was well worth the entry fee.

Next stop was Canyonlands National Park. This is another National Park we have visited before but it was well worth a visit again.

The park is split into three areas by the Colorado River and the Green River. The Maze is inaccessible unless you’re up for a backcountry hike, the Needles only accessible from the south and Islands In The Sky which can only be accessed from the north. Since we were coming from Moab, we decided to do Islands In The Sky.

The views were breathtaking, you feel so small and insignificant compared to the scenery in front of you, it is really humbling.

Most of the hikes we did were short and relatively easy, some of them even involved clambering over large boulders which was fun.

If we had more time in this park, it would have been good to do a boat ride down the river although the rapids where the two rivers meet look violent (according the the video we watched in the visitors center as this is not something you can see from anywhere in the park other than on the river!) so it would need to be up stream! Or if we had a 4x4, taking the 100 mile primitive White Rim Road that goes down into and then round the edge of the canyon. You can see this road in some of our pictures / videos looking down into the canyon. It takes a minimum of 2 days to complete the trip with primitive campsites along the way for you to stop off at although you’d want a very good car as it looks really scary in places!

With a huge storm starting to come in, we decided to head back to Moab for shelter and to get ready for dinner.

  1. Just wow - there are some beeping amazing views, footage and photos. As you say, I bet it is very humbling to see it in person and whilst the vid and pics are amazing, I best they still don't do it justice!!

My favourite post credits scene so far - both very funny and I loved Parkour!!
