In my last post, I talked about the temporary closures to Highway 1. We've now stumbled across some more problems in California which has highlighted some incredibly annoying shortcomings with Furkot - or more likely Google Maps which I assume Furkot is using under the covers.
Google Maps is now aware of seasonal and temporary road closures, and will avoid these when route planning. This is all well and good if you're planning a trip for, say, next week. However, when planning a summer road trip in spring, like we are, this is infuriating.
For example, Tioga Pass out of Yosemite is currently still closed due to the amount of snow they had over winter. Despite the date we are planning to use Tioga Pass being in July - when the pass will most certainly be open - Furkot/Google Maps refuses to route us that way, resulting in a massive and unnecessary detour. This makes planning that part of the trip nigh on impossible.
People on forums have been asking Google to provide an "ignore seasonal closures" feature for some time, but as far as I know nothing has been done. Very, very annoying, Google!
