We've done Highway 1 - The Pacific Coast Highway - through Big Sur between Monterey and LA before. It's such a stunning drive, we want to do it again.
Sam has been getting very frustrated that she couldn't get Furkot to route us successfully down the PCH, so, thinking it was user error, I took up the challenge.
After a fair bit of fiddling I too was unable to route us down Highway 1. It would get us so far, and then get us to turn around and come inland onto the 101. Strange.
So, a bit of Googling later, I discovered that poor Highway 1 has has a torrid time of it of late. Heavy rains have caused massive landslides which has made sections of the road totally impassable. Supports holding up Pfeiffer Canyon bridge were so damaged that the bridge has since been demolished and a new one is being built.
That bridge is due to open in September, but more landslides further South - like the one at Mud Creek - are likely to take up to a year to clear away and the road made safe again. We're going to have to plan for missing PCH and taking the 101 instead - with a view to changing plans if and when the road reopens.
Here are a couple of pics showing the scale of the issue:
