Day 128 - Milwaukee, WI

As soon as we were both awake, we packed up the tent and left Devil's Lake State Park. Today we were driving to Chicago but our route was going to take us through Milwaukee where we were going to stop for lunch.

After spending so much time driving past fields of corn, it had a nice change to drive past dairy farms. Wisconsin is known as the Dairy State, after so long struggling to find decent cheese, we were both looking forward to tasting some strong cheddar or a good blue.

We pulled into Milwaukee and took the drive which ran alongside the lake shore. The first thing we noticed was how green this city was. There seemed to be loads of parks, gardens and green areas. We pulled into a car park and strolled along the beach, it was beautiful. It's difficult to remember that this is just a huge lake, it feels like a beach along the Panhandle with the crystal clear water, soft waves and the sand between our toes.

At the end of Lake Drive, we turned into the city and took a drive past the iconic water tower and then through downtown. We were impressed with how much there was to see in downtown, you would need a couple of days to explore it properly.

For lunch, we headed back to the lake shore where we had spotted a cute little coffee shop with outside seating. We shared a curry chicken (aka coronation chicken) wrap and a snickerdoodle cookie whilst doing a little sunbathing in the garden. I mistakenly thought a snickerdoodle was a Snickers (i.e. chocolate and peanut) but instead it is a type of cookie that is rolled in cinnamon sugar. Even if it was a mistake, the cookie was yummy.

With lunch done, it was time to get back onto the road and finish our journey into Chicago. The journey was mainly on Interstate but we still managed to see a castle, which was actually a cheese shop.

The traffic was surprisingly better than we had thought it would be. We got stuck in a jam just a couple of miles from the hotel but asides from that, the Interstates were strangely quiet for a major city, maybe we were just lucky.

  1. Read the sign about the Drumlins but I didn't see any pictures of them in your entry so I googled some images instead.

What is the building in the 4th pic, it looks quite impressive.

I really like the look of Milwaukee, as you say lots of greenery, parks and then being by the water is great and the pics do give the impression it is a place well worth coming back to for proper exploration.

There are some great buildings/architecture and the water tower is brilliant, can you go inside for a look around?

Lunch looked nice and the weather was good, a brief visit but some cool photos.
