Day 85 - Scottsdale to San Diego, CA

We left Scottsdale behind and headed towards our next destination, San Diego in California.

The drive to San Diego was on the interstate but it was actually a really interesting drive. As we left Scottsdale and Phoenix, we realised how flat these cities are and that city planners had done a pretty good job of keeping the urban areas blended in with the desert landscape.

The drive was through the desert, mountains and sand dunes, we even spotted the border with Mexico a couple of times in the distance. It was recognisable from the big black fence which really stuck out in the landscape.

Not far from San Diego, we saw an odd looking tower just off the side of the road. In need of a break, we decided to check it out. Getting to the tower was via a short drive but along the drive, there were some weird sights, we started to worry what we were driving into! We reached the tower, an information station told us it was an old station from the days of horses and wagons and it is now listed as a historical place. There is a fee to go up to the top of the tower and look out at the view of the desert but we were short of time and a little freaked out by what we saw driving to the tower so decided to head off.

As we came into San Diego, the Interstate started to get really heavy with traffic as it would in any big city at 5pm. We stayed in the traffic for as long as we had to and then found a smaller road to come off on to get to our hotel in Gaslamp.

  1. On your drive to SAN Diego I looked very hard at the pics but as hard as I tried I could not see any big black fences in the distance marking the Mexico border :-(
But your drive was very variable Desert, Mountains, Dunes and even cactus with Stabilisers;-) :-)
I also wondered what all that junk on the way to the tower was meant to represent??
    Looking forward to hear
what your Hotel in Gaslamp was like ( not dark I hope ;-) )

    1. We didn't manage to get a good picture of the fence on camera, it was too far away and not clear enough.

I think the entrance to the tower might have been a nomadic area with people who had spent too long in the desert sun.

  2. Some more cool pics and looked like a good drive into SD. I think you did the right thing by giving the tower a miss, the run up to it did look a bit weird.

Looking forward to reading about SD as it is a place I've always wanted to go, but that is for another night - time for bed.
