It is located on the shore of Mirror Lake, a crystal clear lake where no motorised boats are allowed so the waters are clean enough to swim in, if you don’t mind the cold. Our room was lovely, we had a huge bed and a balcony overlooking Mirror Lake which was perfect for sitting on in the mornings and evenings and just taking in the spectacular scenery.
The hotel facilities were amazing. There was a beach on the lake with free use of various non-motorised boating equipment but the favourite part for us was the racketball court and the swimming pool and spa.
We play a lot of racketball in the UK but in the US, it’s a completely different game! There is no tin or lines to get the ball between and the ball is so much more bouncy, so bouncy it can easily go off all 4 walls and the ceiling without dying. The bounciness of the ball and its speed was difficult to get used to, maybe with a few more days practice we’d get a bit better at controlling it.
Lake Placid downtown area had plenty of shops, bars and restaurants to keep us entertained plus we visited the Olympic Ski Jump site. Lake Placid hosted the winter Olympics in 1932 and 1980, this site in both Olympics hosted the ski jump competition.
We were surprised to find out that the downtown area of Lake Placid doesn’t actually sit on Lake Placid, it sits on the shores of Mirror Lake. Lake Placid is a bigger lake open to motorised boats and located a few miles away. We didn’t visit it as we were enjoying Mirror Lake far too much.
On our final night, we headed out for food at the Delta Blue Bar where there was an open mic night. It was here that we met US-native Will and we had a fantastic evening with him playing foosball (Will won), seeing who knew more capitals of the world (Lee thought he had this one in the bag, but Will won again) and discussing the quality of the acts. It was a lot of fun and it wasn’t until the clock ticked over to the am that we headed back to the hotel.
great looking brekkie and the trip up the ski jump was cool. Soph and I visited an Olympic jump in Oslo and it is not until you are up there that you realise how scary it must be, so high, so steep. Banging soundtrack to this too.
ReplyDeleteReally cool to see a different end to the day with the racketball, beers, dinner and games - nice change of pace and a chill out end to the day.
