Day 138 - Woodstock, VT

It had started raining during the night, not particularly hard but enough to get the outside of the fly completely wet. The rain stopped at around 8am so we delayed leaving until about 10am just to give it time to dry out.

Once the tent was packed away, we headed over to a couple of sights we wanted to see in Lake George before we left. The first was the US States themed crazy golf which was unfortunately closed, maybe due to the rain or because it was now out of season. The second was Prospect Mountain. This is a 5 mile scenic drive up the mountain with pull outs along the way to take in the view and an observation tower at the top. It’s not free to drive along the road, it costs $10 per car so not as expensive as Whiteface the day before and we would have done the drive had there not been a thick cover of low lying cloud. You’re supposed to be able to see 100 miles from the 2030ft summit, we wouldn’t have been able to see just a few miles this give the poor visibility today. We decided to save some time and money and avoid disappointment by giving it a miss.

We decided to use the saved time to get Fin serviced. He was over due now having done more than 5,000 miles since the last service and one of those fluids by the engine were edging underneath the minimum line. I don’t know much about cars but I assume this is not good.

We found a Firestone 15 minutes down the road so we dropped Fin off and took at 20 minute walk to our first Denny’s of the road trip for some supersized breakfast.

So full we are struggling to walk and loaded up with a box full up of left over pancakes, we walked back to the garage and passed some very large and beautiful houses.

Fin had a full bill of health and 4 lovely new tyres to show off so we hit the road again and headed over the border to Vermont and our stop for the night in the town of Woodstock.

Just before we got into Woodstock, we stopped off at the Long Trail Brewing company for some quick refreshments. We have stopped off at lots of breweries along the way but this one was planned before we left for the trip as I had heard such great things about the beers. After trying a sampler of 8 of those great beers, we hit the road for the final stretch to Woodstock.

When I hear Woodstock, I automatically think of the festival but that is held in New York State and not Vermont. The Woodstock in Vermont is a sleepy, arty town with a lot of expensive looking houses. We enjoyed walking around looking at the houses and the fall decorations.

There was a small lights festival on in the park with local artists and the school showing off some of their designs.

There was also a really thought provoking display representing all the children that had been killed through gun crime in the US in 2018. Given there are still a few months of 2018 left, it’s sad to think that more flags will continue to be added.

For dinner, we ate in a bar / restaurant called Bentleys where we shared a charcuterie board and a cheese board. All the cheese and meats on the board were from local producers and this was the first time in America that either of us had tasted cheese the way cheese should taste. The cheddar and the blue cheese were as good as the high end cheeses we get back home. Finally, we have cheese!

The restaurant turned into a bar and when the dance tunes came on and the drunk people walked through the door, we decided to head back to our B&B.

The B&B was the Charleston House and it was located a short walk away from the shops and restaurants on the Main Street. The house had an early 1900 vibe with antique furniture and traditional decor but there were still modern amenities. We met the owners and the other guests over a tasty breakfast, they were all lovely and we enjoyed chatting whilst eating our eggs, fruit and croissants.
