Day 29 - St Louis, MO

Lee worked in St Louis over 15 years ago. It was whilst he was here that he became a Cardinals fan through watching too much baseball on TV in sports bars. He has wanted to return to this city ever since I have known him and now he had his chance!

We stayed in the Hilton at the Ball Park and had a stunning room that overlooked the Busch III stadium. We arrived at 10:30 and the Hilton let us check in early so we were able to have a quick shower after our primitive camping experience (I bet we stank!) and then hit St Louis.

There wasn't a game on the day we were in town but this gave us an opportunity to do a tour of the stadium instead which was really worth doing and we enjoyed getting to go onto the pitch, into the dug outs and behind the scenes.

The riverboat tour and The Gateway Arch were both excellent too. One of the best things about The Arch (asides from the view at the top) is the really cool 5 person elevator that takes you up to the top, they are very futuristic looking, if a little cosy!

In the evening, we went to 360 bar at the top of our hotel to watch the sun set and then watched the Ice Hockey and a Baseball game or two in the Ball Park bars.

We'd heard that St Louis wasn't a safe city for a tourist to walk around. We stayed around the Ball Park which is an area that has recently undergone a lot of development following the building of Busch III. The Ball Park was just over the road from our hotel and there were plenty of bars and restuarants to keep us entertained all evening. The park around The Arch had also recently been redeveloped and had been handed over to the National Park Service to manage. This also felt safe, even at dusk with a lot of National Park employees walking around the park offering help, advice and probably keeping the area in check. Maybe outside of these areas St Louis isn't recommended for the traveler but we didn't venture any further out.

  2. Looks like a really different day to the couple of days previous but a really fun and interesting day.

Excellent video, one of the very best, the stadium looked fab, don't know much about Baseball or the Cardinals but it looked really good tour and a great stadium although really open, more a field with stand around the outside.

The rive boat looked like a great trip and the Arch is superb, I love going up tall buildings and would have been up for that

Some brilliant pics, especially of the Arch

Very funny start to the vid, Sam not knowing where you were going and a lovely end to the day in your hotel bar which had a superb view of the ball park - a top, top day and blog entry!
