Day 51 & 52 - Big Bend National Park, TX

Big Bend was breathtaking, inspiring and stunning at every turn, at every angle. It has quickly become one of our favourite National Parks.

We camped in Chisos Basin campground which was 10F cooler than the other campground. The slight dip in temperature did make sleeping here more comfortable as did the sun shade over the picnic bench which we camped under. Each campsite was really secluded and the one we chose had stunning views to wake up to in the morning and watch the sunset in the evening. It was a shame we only stayed here for two nights.

The campsite was basic, there were toilets but no showers but just a 5 minute drive away was the Chisos Mountain Lodge where there was a bar, restaurant, shop and motel style accommodation for those who prefer not to camp. We used the shop a couple of times to buy ice and the bar once to hide away from a thunderstorm (you are a little exposed on the campsite!).

The camp host was fantastic - really friendly and helpful. A bear was sighted at the campsite next to ours and he kindly came over to warn us. We didn't see a bear but Lee did see a skunk, a deer, and the bum of a Javelina (black pig-like animal) which initially he thought was a bear until we saw a picture of them in the visitors center.

We enjoyed going along the Mexican border and were surprised by the lack of Border Patrol people. We assume that border crossings in Big Bend are too difficult and too rare to have too many people patrolling or maybe we just came at a time of year when its too hot and too dangerous to make the crossing.

I hope the video gives you the sense of how amazing this place is and why we love it so much.

  1. Wow long video, I'll make comments as I watch I think, which means a bit stop start for me but hopefully it'll work out ok....

    1) Welcome back in-car commentary, first one in a while and good to see it back, also with you back and forth
    2) promising sounding soundtrack to this vid too
    3) very straight although up and down road - pretty spectacular
    4) some great driving footage and a bit of my fave of catching what you are listening to on the radio
    5) great Roadrunner statue when you stop for gas
6)Some amazing scenery as you came into Big Bend no onto the campsite section
    7) super camping spot, made for your tent and nice location with stunning views
    8) great to see the BBQ and the food/beer from your shopping trip for a few entries ago. Nice to see some camp-life action too
    9) A real roadrunner - cool
10)The walk seemed hard going and looked very hot, some fab photos, especially as sun set.

  2. And Day 52...

    1) lovely early morning views
    2) Bear and Mountain Lions - bit scary and Mum won't like that!!
    3) Good of someone to lie down and hold the camera so they could
film you walking on the lost mine trail ;-)
    4) wow that looked like a proper hike and hard going but some fantastic views - truly superb. No mention of the lost mine though, I assume it is still living up to its name?
    5) Hehe, I like the sped up driving footage as you came down the mountain and some great photos here too - great soundtrack too, very apt
    6) Man the canyons are huge although I have to admit first shots of the Rio Grande were a bit disappointing given how little river there was. Cool to be able to muck about on the border though :-)
    7) Lee's grooving tour of camp to Jess Glyne made me chuckle, very different to the rest of the vid and clearly Sam was busy and not wanting to arse around.
    8) Cool to see the storm from inside the tent and proves what a good pitch you had!!

  3. A great video and a super couple of days - looked lovely and lots of it reminded me of Breaking Bad, drugs deals and RV meth labs wouldn't have been out of keeping - great job a brilliant entry.

  5. Wow what a great video of the last two days. Andrew commented on it so well so there is just one or two things for me to say. He was so right it was a bit scary for me to see you two right out in the wilderness with no one else around and a few negative thoughts came to mind :-( also of course I am not bright enough to realise that speeding down a very bendy road was only done on the video and there was me shouting what the heck has he got to go so fast for and then a little further on I was relived you had slowed down. How stupid am I :-( but in all fairness I did realise that the jiggly bit at the camp site was done to the music and not a result of Lee being a bit over hydrated :-)
A really good video with superb scenery. Mum xx
