Day 63 - Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, CO

We spent two nights camping in Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park so we had an entire day of exploring.

We decided to hike first thing in the morning before the sun got too hot or the storms rolled in and then spent the afternoon doing the two scenic drives, one around the rim of the canyon and one down to the bottom!

The weather was fantastic during the day but every evening at around 6pm, storms rolled in and we ended up with strong wind and heavy rain. At the time, we found it really annoying but looking back, we had a lot of fun and laughs despite the weather.

We were warned when we checked into the campsite not to approach the deer. They use the campsite to give birth and look after their young and can be really aggressive, one lady nearly died a few years ago from a deer attack! Unfortunately, avoiding the deer was not easy as their favourite pastimes seemed to be hanging out by the water making it really difficult for us to fill up our bottles before hiking and terrorising campers by choosing to have their dinner right next to the tents (rather than in all the open space they had outside the tent sites!).

  1. You both seemed a bit crazy in the in-car section, I guess after your tent pitch challenges it made you go a bit delirious - very funny though and good work with the bleeper Sam. It was funny that there was hardly any breeze when you looked out although the walk up to the pitch did show the fly rippling in the wind!! A small and secluded pitch as well. Some great shots with the deer and luckily they didn't look too angry.

PS - Mum won't be too pleased with the mention of being blown off into the canyon or being kicked to death by deer :-S

The Hike didn't seem that strenuous but I did figure with all that down hill there would have to be an uphill section!! I also noticed that all the trails you've been on have been really well maintained and clean.

Lunch looked yummy and a lovely setting in which to enjoy it. I had to google 'growler' as my understanding of the term is something totally different! Am I right that its a jug for carrying beer, typically either ceramic/glass/steel?

Some amazing views through out this video and very picturesque and scenic. The drive down to the bottom of the canyon was great and nice to see the river and dam, lovely clear water and glad you had a paddle. Some great photos too.

Some amazing views of the canyon walls and the painted wall in particular, loved the video of Lee jogging round to the other look out point!

Great footage with the storm and then deer in the camp and a treat of a 3 scene post credits clip - great video!!

  2. Can well imagine that it was not easy putting up the tent in those windy conditions.
Andrew was quite right I did not like hearing about being pitched close to the canyon and some one making a silly comment about it being your last ever blog.
Interesting hike and fantastic views in to the canyon and then to paddle in the river at the bottom.
Dinner at lunch looked scrumptious and must have well made up for the previous somewhat ordinary looking wraps ;-)
Going so close to the edge of the rim to the canyon was not clever and just you wait my boy the next time I see that bum for real it’s going to get a smack :-)
Lee’s impression of a Mountain Lion was good and if that is the only one you ever come across Sam than I am more than happy.
    Love to you both XX
